Are drivers of the ridesharing companies (UBER, BOLT etc.) required to speak the official language?

     On 11 October 2024, the Seimas adopted an amendment to the Official Language Act regarding the requirement to serve customers in Lithuanian: legal and natural persons selling goods and/or providing services in the Republic of Lithuania, other organisations and their branches, with the exception of natural persons selling goods temporarily in the Republic of Lithuania and natural persons who do not engage in the sale of goods on a permanent basis, shall ensure that customers are served directly in the official language at the level of proficiency in Lithuanian established by the Government.

     From 1 January 2026, drivers must serve customers in the official language. This will encourage them to integrate more fully into Lithuanian society and to learn the Lithuanian language.

     The amendment to the Act came into force on 1 January 2026.
