To what standard must immigrants arriving in Lithuania be proficient in the official language?

     Only working immigrants are required to speak Lithuanian (with the exceptions provided for in legislation, such as persons under temporary protection) and only those whose job duties require them to speak the official language.

     The job roles for which proficiency in the official language is required are regulated by points 7–9 of the ‘Description of the Procedure for Establishing Categories of Proficiency in the Official Language and the Procedure for their Application’, approved by Resolution No. 1688 of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania on 24 December 2003 ‘On the Approval of the Description of the Procedure for Establishing Categories of Proficiency in the State Language and Their Application’.
